In this post, we show you how to make the crispiest golden onion rings at home. Onion rings make for the perfect savoury snack that nobody can resist! Onion rings are a delicious snack on their own but also work really well as a side dish. If you've ever wondered how to make them, look no further. Enjoy!

Check out the recipe video below!

Ingredients

2 x Large Brown Onions

150g x Self-Raising Flour

180ml x Sparkling Water

Salt

Ground Black Pepper

Ice Cubes

Sunflower Oil (for deep frying)

Plain flour for dusting/coating the onion rings

Method

1. Begin, by taking the onions and removing the root and stem before completely peeling the remaining skin away. We use a small paring knife to do this.

2. Next, cut the onions into one-inch slices, that's roughly two and a half centimetres. Press down on the centre of the onion rings and the individual onion rings will pop straight out.

3. To make the batter, simply place the self-raising flour, a pinch of salt and a few grinds or a pinch of black pepper into a bowl followed by the sparkling water. Whisk until completely smooth and the mix resembles a pouring cream-like consistency.

4. Add in three to four ice cubes. This helps to keep the mix really cold and puff up when it hits the hot sunflower oil.

5. On a plate add plain flour, a pinch of salt and black pepper. There is no specific amount of flour but enough to coat the onion rings before dipping them into the batter.

6. Next heat the sunflower oil to 180°C - 356°F. Toss the onion rings into the seasoned flour and then dip them into the batter and then back into the flour again and into the batter one final time.

7. Gently place the double battered onion rings into the hot oil and cook for 2 minutes on each side or until crisp and golden. Remove from the oil onto kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Give a little sprinkle of salt and enjoy!
